Firearm Competency

Basic Competency consists of a minimum 2 unit standards:
The Knowledge of the Firearms Control Act (Act 60 of 2000) and at least one of the following:

• Handle and use a handgun
• Handle and use a shotgun
• Handle and use a manually operated rifle
• Handle and use a self-loading rifle

The basic competency training consists of: 

• Summative written test
• formative written test
• Practical test

If you want to own a firearm, you must undergo training at an accredited institution and obtain a training proficiency certificate. Once you have obtained the competency certificate, you can apply for a firearm license at your nearest police station. You need a license for every firearm that you possess.

Training material and training programs are accredited by the quality assurer; the South African Professional Firearm Trainers Council (PFTC) and are compliant with the requirements of the respective unit standards as set out by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA).

Training material is written in support of the Firearms Control Act 60 of 2000 and is recognized by the South African Police Services (SAPS).

Must have Grade 9
